Belgian Motocross – Can They Fight back?

The big question in 2012 is ‘can a Belgian rider win the FIM World Motocross Championship?’ It’s been four years now since Steve Ramon picked up the 2007 FIM World MX1 Championship. Since Joel Robert won Belgium a World 250cc Championship way back in 1964, Belgium has often had a World Champion in a calendar year. Only missing out in a handful of years.
FIM World MX1 contender and Belgian’s favorite to win a World Championship is Clement Desalle, a fighter who proved last year that he can be the fastest rider in the World. However, he needs to work on consistency to be able to match the legendary Antonio Cairoli.

After Desalle it’s pretty thin pickings, with veterans Kevin Strijbos and Ken De Dycker reaching their expiration date and not a single Belgium contender in the MX1 class after these three. Only Joel Roelants and Jeremy Van Horebeek in the MX2 class stand out as possible contenders for the future, although both are very inconsistent and yet to really show the speed of the leading MX2 contenders.
Add to the fact that Belgium’s last World Motocross Champion Steve Ramon seems sure likely to retire (although there is talk of a comeback) due to a serious back injury, it just adds to the worries of the small country.
For the first time in many years Belgium won’t have a round of the FIM World Motocross Championship this year, with Lommel preferring to put its energies into this year’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations.
Another problem in Belgium is the closing of practice tracks and race circuits.

Motocross legends Stefan Everts, Joel Smets and Eric Geboers have been fighting hard against the local governments to keep circuits open, but with little luck. Even Everts home track Neeroeteren, which has hosted several Grand Prix and was the training track for both Stefan and his father Harry (a four times World Motocross Champion), closed a couple of years ago despite a great rally by the Motocross supporters. Recently the famous Kester circuit closed to racing and of course a few years ago Namur ceased to run Motocross races.
When you consider that the top ten all-time FIM World Motocross Championship winners list contains Stefan Everts, Joel Robert, Joel Smets, Roger De Coster, Eric Geboers, Georges Jobe and Harry Everts, then you can understand that Belgium is the land of the giants. Like the fictional television program of the 1960’s it seems like its time is also running out, as countries like Italy, France and Germany take over as the leading in World Motocross.

Fortunately with the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations being held in Lommel in September, the Belgian fans have a lot to be happy.

Interview Josep Maria Servia - Africa Race ..

15/11/2011
Enduro Geographic: First of all, congratulations on another year go ahead with this great race, the Africa Race is becoming bigger, more beautiful and more competitive which is what makes it different from everything else in Africa ..?

Josep Maria: Africa Race has recovered the spirit of adventure of the African races, where the main opponent is the desert, and this coupled with the family atmosphere that reigns in the camp, makes participants help each other on the track with the aim common way to get all the Pink Lake.

Enduro Geographic: This is the fourth year of the Africa Race, one could say that the race is at its best, with many drivers entered ..?

Josep Maria: The race is at its best, the entries seem to going well, the beginnings are always difficult and at a time of economic crisis over yet, but each year has improved and this may represent the consolidation of the test. Anyway, the organization hopes to continue to grow and continue to improve year after year.

Enduro Geographic: We know that part of the team to trace the routes in Africa, Road Book'sy your words weigh heavily in Africa RACE, that way you decide which are the best tracks ..?

Josep Maria: Fine Roman, my wife and I have been fortunate to be part of this team from day one and from the second year to have René Metge and Manfred Kroiss us. Field knowledge and experience are essential for this task, we all know about Africa and we've played a lot of races on this continent, especially in 1981 René already won his first Dakar. First mentally prepare a path defined in more detail in the computer. Once on the ground, we recognize the different options and decided on the most appropriate time to time.

Enduro Geographic: Could you tell us how long it takes to trace the routes and how many days are in Africa for this work ..?

Josep Maria: To set all the way and take notes needed to make the road book, we are in Africa between five and six weeks. Many miles and many notes to take and sometimes we have come to define a 800 km special stage of just over 400. The work is done very thoroughly and the proof is that in the overture there are very few changes, usually 2 or 3 and 6 while more water because the area had changed.

Interview Josep Maria Servia - Africa Race ..

Enduro Geographic: More and more pilots of many countries, there are more levels and much more competition in the rally ..?

.

Josep Maria: Fortunately, the race has been growing and increasing participation, so that competition is increasing and more teams are forced to commit a minimum of errors if they are eligible for a good result..

.

Enduro Geographic: We have been told that the air we breathe in the race is fantastic and very familiar, we can say about this ..?

.

Josep Maria: I am part of the opening team and we can only share with participants the last two or three camps and the atmosphere is really great, it's like a family that travels long distances every day. I always remember the caravans of settlers in western movies where collaboration between families is unconditional.

Enduro Geographic: For those who do not want to run, is also available on the Raid option to follow the rally route to Lake Rose in Dakar, we could explain how it works ..?

.

Josep Maria: The Raid is another great way to meet both career spanning countries. Usually leave the camp behind race cars and are a part of the course of these, more or less long according to their difficulty and when left joining the tour of the assists. Always accompanied by a vehicle of the organization and freedom of following one day attendances if they do not want to get into the tracks.

.

Enduro Geographic: We were in Africa on occasion, but with your experience as you explain to someone who has never been in a race like this and not know Africa, which is what you can find in this great adventure ..?

.

Josep Maria: Africa is a spectacular with amazing scenery and wonderful people and very welcoming. From the hand of a good organization can reveal very beautiful and have moments that will remain engraved in our minds permanently and safely. As race recovers the spirit of adventure of the most mythical times, with the security measures offered by new technologies such as Iritrack that allows the organization to know the position of all participants at all times, or requiring hidden waypoint participants to go through a certain point and thus can not be separated too far from the planned course.

The first day of race in Kotka, Finland, gives opening to a race that already knew it would be very difficult not only to fight in the land of Vikings, which tooked advantadge very well the Team of Finland, which runs at home, but rain and mud is still much more complicated search for the right drawn after more than 400 riders in the race.

Six Days Finland, Junior Trophy

Earth, sand, huge rocks, roots and muddy did you find the drivers on the first day of racing in Kotka - Finland and of course the surprises in the standings and were also much larger.

The surprise of the day gave Sweden, also assume that the terrain they know a little more, but even so, the results achieved by its 4 drivers is fantastic ..! Johan Carlsson and the fastest of the day Enduro Junior. Following Sweden 2 nd place is France, which always is a favorite and a year shows, with Benoit Fortunato, "the rapid Private World," giving war as anyone.

The 3rd place and another surprise gives Britain, followed by Australia in 4 th place, signing such a great start in Six Days, 2 very solid Teams at the top of the standings.

Found in 5 th place in Spain, this year, I must say ..! comes less gunpowder in this category in previous years, but hopefully also give us many surprises.

The 6th place is for the Chilean team, followed by U.S. in 7 th place, but with Italy and Finland, will surely recover and be fighting for the top places in the coming days .. Czech Republic occupies the 8 th place, followed by Alemanya 9 and 10 th Netherlands.

At No. 11 and surprise gave way to disappointment the Junior Italy and Finland, in Italy by the abandonment of thomas Oldrati by a physical problem and the penalty of 30 minutes after Jonathan Manzi to break the chain would take a lot time to return to race and left shivering to Italy, which along with Finland has one of the best teams in the category on the side of Finland is ranked number 12 º..!!, has no less than the fastest World Enduro, Junior, Antti Hellsten and not failure and marked the 2 nd fastest time of the category in the present day, a bad day for the Junior Vikings, but we assume that in the coming days also fought in the most high and will give us plenty to talk and tell ..

The Catalan Government northern Spain, will allow circular for routes of less than four meters in Catalunya

Go on a bike or car in the forest lands and natural areas is no longer a crime, even to sports in these areas, too. This is intended Administrative law simplifications that promotes Catalan Govierno. The new law include the possibility of allowing motorized access tracks and roads narrow, less than four metres less wide. Something that until now prohibited by law since 1995. It also eliminates restrictions that prohibit motor sports competition in protected areas. With only three articles, is to turn around like a law in our opinion meaningless, which carries 16 years in force, but whose implementation has been a continuing headache for the Administration.
The Catalan Govierno relax the law, harshly criticized by fans of motorcycles, manufacturers and sportsmen who practice various specialties of the motor in the mountains.
Enduro by Geographic remember the "Agents Forest" is directly affected thousands of people working in the motor industry, Textile and endless sports shops, related to this sector generates many jobs and also promotes tourism and consumption, without going too far on 2 and April 3, 2011 World Enduro Pons opened in Catalonia and throughout this week flocked journalists around the world and lots of tourists from France, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Finland's, etc. .., are filled area hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, clubs and petrol stations, and cities where the tour makes a career as Basell, smelled, PONS, Tiurana, VILLANOVA DE L'ACUTE and many more areas of Lleida.

Yes for the Green Bike

The Catalan Govierno lift the ban on driving on roads and tracks less than four meters wide defining specific itineraries. They operate under specified conditions may be less stringent. And for this, the counselor will approve the appropriate orders, which allow motorized traffic on these roads. Now, surveillance is such that, to move into the forest, groups of more than three motorcycles must obtain special authorization. Instead, what you're looking for with this change is "defining roads or sections of routes, which may have less than four meters wide, in which the groups can move without permission," said Josep Escorihuela, CEO of Medi Natural .
The veto will not rise indiscriminately, but that the measure is bounded to "the requests made by the motorcycling federation of Spain and other groups that have requested to have the easiest access to the mountain, even if paying", a possibility that the Government of Catalunya is not only not rule but is studying.

The law removes the ban on sporting events in the natural areas of basic protection (the plan of natural areas, Pein), where cars and motorcycles can now move only on roads and paved runways. The problem is that current law creates great uncertainty. The Catalan government is granting permits to hold the motor racing, but have warned that legal services are "false", says Escorihuela, so the change has been made legal.

In addition, sports competitions may also be carried out in special protection areas, game reserves and wildlife nature reserves. In these areas, the races are not timed sections and will not necessarily take the paved ground, but may devise "by roads suitable for motorized traffic, the report of the managing body of space and in accordance with the authorizations," he indicated.

Stefan Everts interview – Team Orders

Red Bull Teka KTM Factory team manager Stefan Everts was excited entering the Grand Prix of Bulgaria. Having watched his riders work hard throughout the winter, he was delighted with the boys preparation and motivation for the 2011 season.
With the Championship favorites in both MX1 and MX2 (Antonio Cairoli and Ken Roczen), in the KTM team there will always be pressure and expectations. We talked to Stefan about his riders and what he expects from them.
Q: Stefan, watching Ken Roczen racing in America looked really excited, but it was also at times wild. It must have been nice to have him back in Europe?
Everts: This year I don't have much stress, everything went good with the guys, I mean, the MX2 guys. I was happy that Ken came back from US in one piece and he put in some training in Lommel for two weeks. I also advised him to do that and he did that.
Q: How about Jeffrey Herlings, how has his preparation been?
Everts: Jeffrey’s shoulder came good and he was on it from December. He has put in a lot of hours on the bike and he is in good shape. He is ready for it, he wants to race for the Title. We all know, and he knows that Ken is the favorite, but he is going to try and beat him of course.
Q: And Jeremy Van Horebeek is back in orange. How has it been working with him?
Everts: The third guy is Jeremy, he had a good ending of last season and my ambition is that he gets to his full potential. He didn't train as much as he should have in the past, but this winter he has really worked hard and he had full confidence in me helping him with his riding and training. He stepped it up and did some good pre-season races and I expect some good results this season.
Q: Jeremy seems like a fun guy, always smiling and playing around?
Everts: He is a bit of a joker, it's good to have fun, but at some point you need to stop the joking and get serious and we are working on that. Jeffrey also has his thing, everyone does. I was relaxed and excited to come into this season and it was the first year I felt that (as team manager). I see how well everyone is doing and the good shape they are all in.
Q: How is the first race of the season for you, as a team manager, but also when you raced?
Everts: It is always special, the first race of the season and for sure the first Grand Prix. At the end I was more relaxed, but still it would give some extra butterflies in the stomach and for sure these guys have that also.
Q: Did you ever have a start to a season that you were not happy with, where you felt unprepared?
Everts: I remember in 1995 when I came back after losing the Title from Greg (Albertyn) in 1994. I was so disappointed and nearly quit racing at one point in that winter. I stepped into the season with not so much motivation and it was a year I don't easily forget and the bad stuff that kept happening to me. I cut my knee at my home track in Belgium, also my car got stolen, some races didn’t go well and in Switzerland I did a bad moto and got passed on the last corner. Things were not that great in that season. Other seasons I was looking forward to going out and racing.
